The Reno Sparks Kiwanis Bike Program continues to reach out to children throughout northern Nevada.  Our calendar year runs from October 1- September 30 in order to be consistent with the reporting year for Kiwanis International so this report spans two quarters and our fiscal year. For pictures from these programs

In addition to the rodeos and bike repair clinics, we distributed over 600 bikes and over 1500 helmets since January, 2005.  We continue to seek venues for the program to reach primarily at risk children from low income neighborhoods.  Our data to-date indicates that over 90% of the children from these neighborhoods do not wear helmets, and do not have a bike with brakes, chain and tires that are safe for use.  By contrast the events at locations like the boy scouts reflect the opposite with over 90% of the participants indicating that their parents won’t allow them to ride without a helmet, and their bikes (if they bring them) are typically in good repair.  We plan to expand the “caught safe” idea to at least two other locations this year, encouraging kids to use helmets by providing some type of incentive when they do. This will be initiated in Spring, 2006.

Funding during this period was received from the following additional sources:  Kiwanis clubs $7000, City of Reno $5000, other contributions and revenues over $3000.  These reflect support received through October 1, 2005.  We also expended uncompensated volunteer hours in excess of 1000 hours in support of all program activities.
