The Reno Sparks Kiwanis Bike Program continues to reach out to children throughout northern Nevada. Our calendar year runs from October 1- September 30 in order to be consistent with the reporting year for Kiwanis International so this report spans two quarters and our fiscal year.
In addition to the rodeos and bike repair clinics, we distribute over 600 bikes and over 1500 helmets annually. We continue to seek venues for the program to reach primarily at risk children from low income neighborhoods. Our data to-date indicates that over 90% of the children from these neighborhoods do not wear helmets, and do not have a bike with brakes, chain and tires that are safe for use. By contrast the events at locations like the boy scouts reflect the opposite with over 90% of the participants indicating that their parents won’t allow them to ride without a helmet, and their bikes (if they bring them) are typically in good repair. Our “caught safe” incentive program encourages kids to use helmets.
Our programs are supported primarily by the Kiwanis Club of Downtown Sparks, grants, donations and bike sales. We also receive support from the other local Kiwanis Clubs.
We schedule programs at the bike shop or other locations based on availability of volunteers and training resources. Contact us to discuss opportunities to work with your youth organizations (use the e-mal link below).
